Energy consumption in the household sector

In 2024, the total energy consumption, expressed in the energy unit terajoules (TJ), in the household sector in Montenegro was 12 167.2 TJ. The largest share in consumption was achieved by firewood with 5 627.2 TJ (46.2%), followed by electricity with 5 580.0 TJ (45.9%), which indicates the equal importance of these energy sources for households. Wood pellets and briquettes participate with 743.5 TJ (6.1%), while all other energy sources, including wood chips and wood residue, coal, charcoal, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), coal briquettes and extra light heating oil together form 1.8% of total household energy consumption.
Observed by municipality, Podgorica recorded the highest energy consumption with 2 631.6 TJ, while Niksic also had significant consumption (1 338.0 TJ), as well as Bijelo Polje (933.7 TJ). On the other hand, municipalities with the lowest energy consumption are Pluzine (60.3 TJ), and Savnik (44,7 TJ).
When it comes to physical units of measure, the household sector in Montenegro achieved a total consumption of 1.550 GWh of electricity, 613.225 m³ of firewood, and 44.130 tonnes of wood pellets and briquettes in 2024. Electricity is the most represented in Podgorica, with a consumption of 436 GWh, followed by Bar (144 GWh), Budva (143 GWh), and Niksic (125 GWh). Firewood consumption is the highest in Podgorica (97.108 m³), Niksic (86.576 m³), Bijelo Polje (66.330 m³), and Berane (49.397 m³). The consumption of wood pellets and briquettes is the highest in Podgorica (8.386 t), Bijelo Polje (6.170 t), and Pljevlja (5.831 t).
Looking at the structure of energy consumption within individual municipalities, expressed in terajoules (TJ), electricity has the largest share in total energy consumption in coastal municipalities, especially in Budva (90.3%), Herceg Novi (79.0%), Tivat (77.5%), Kotor (77.2%), Bar (69.1%), and Ulcinj (60.8%).
