Description of statistical domain
Section of Demography Statistics within the Sector of Social Statistics covers the statistics on births, deaths, marriages and divorces, migrations, production of basic demographic indicators, as well as estimation and projections on population. The data on vital statistics (births, deaths, marriages and divorces) are one of the oldest data possessed by Statistical Office of Montenegro, and they are collected since 1960. Production of population projections at the level of Montenegro by gender and age recently started, because up to 2006 these projections were done at the level of existing countries.
Legal and methodological bases
Legal basis for conducting of all statistical surveys in area of demography statistics is Law on Official Statistics and Official Statistical System of Montenegro (Official Gazette of Montenegro 18/12 from 30 March 2012), and Annual Plan of Statistical Surveys (Official Gazette of Montenegro 53/11 of 11 November 2011).
Methodological bases for demography statistics are covered by regulations:
• International migrations - Regulation EU862/2007;
• Regulation EU 0440/2011; and
• UN recommendations for the production of vital statistics.
Data sources for demography statistics are Ministry of interior and Register on permanent and temporal residence, and Register of foreigners kept within the Population Register. Additionally, the data sources are also Ministry of interior Registry Offices (register on marriages) and Courts responsible for divorces.
