The glossary covers definitions of key concepts, variables and terminology underlying the statistical data; definitions of statistical units, populations, elements, indicators and indices.

A glossary is a central repository which can be referred to throughout the data production process from survey design and data collection to dissemination, e.g. publication of data tables on the web linked to the corresponding statistical concept definitions. A glossary is a reference tool, for both internal and external users, enhancing data search, encouraging the use of standard definitions and promoting harmonization.

There are several examples of glossaries developed by different statistical organizations to manage information on statistical concepts and definitions. Information content of the MONSTAT glossary is essentially the same as in the acknowledged international ones, such as OECD (Glossary of Statistical Terms at the address http://stats.oecd.org/glossary/ ) and CODED (Eurostat's Concepts and Definitions Database at the address http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/index.cfm?TargetUrl=DSP_PUB_WELC).
